Fairfield County gets talked about as if it's one market. It isn't. The towns that make up this corner of Connecticut and its bordering New York communities each have their own character, price point, density, and pace of life — and the differences between them are meaningful enough to change where a buyer ends up.
This map is built around two distinct parts of the region.
Along the coast, the Gold Coast — Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Westport, and their neighbors — carries the reputation most people associate with Fairfield County. Shorter train commutes, high density of amenity, and price tags to match.
Inland, there's what I call the Emerald Hills — my name for the green, quieter towns where Fairfield County gives way to something that feels unmistakably like New England. Stretching north and west from the Gold Coast, these are the towns defined by something the shoreline can't offer: space, elevation, and genuine character. Stone walls line country roads. Town greens anchor village centers. Farm stands, hiking trails, and independent restaurants sit alongside easy access to Metro-North, the Merritt Parkway, and I-684. Some of the best public schools in Connecticut are here — Ridgefield, Wilton, and Weston consistently rank among the top in the state. And the culture, the cuisine, and the connections that come with proximity to the city haven't gone anywhere. These are the towns where New Yorkers come when they're ready to trade the commute grind for something quieter — without giving anything up. Spanning inland Fairfield County and the bordering Westchester towns of North Salem, South Salem, and Pound Ridge, each town has its own personality — but they share the same essential quality: you feel like you've arrived somewhere.
